Gazebo Nights ready to rock Normal Park
Gazebo Nights in Normal Park returns for a fourth year with a lineup of mostly new bands to the concert series. Mike Mensching of MGM Talent Productions is bringing in some of the area’s top cover bands for seven weeks of Gazebo Nights this summer. The theme this year is “Mench’s Buddies & Bands,” as all the performers have a long history with Mensching. He’s been promoting shows for many years and works with up to 100 bands.
“I’ve worked with some of them over 30 years,” Mike said.
Mensching and his partner, Karen Karow, both of Merrill, conceived Gazebo Nights shortly after the Gazebo was constructed in Normal Park in 2011 with a donation from Lydia Bauman as a home for the Merrill City Band.
They started with “100 posters and word of mouth,” Mike said. Within 10 days of getting the idea, the pair had Gazebo Nights well on its way to reality.
In that first year, 2012, they put on four concerts, ending with a show by Copper Box that drew 600 people. For the second year, the series was stretched to seven weeks.
Last year, the concerts averaged 350-400 attendees and perennial favorite Copper Box drew about 800.
With Gazebo Nights, Mensching and Karow wanted to provide a new event for the Merrill community.
“This is good family fun,” Mike said. “We’re trying to offer a good night out for families.”
Local businesses help by sponsoring the bands and non-profit groups raise funds by selling food and beverages at the park.
“It’s good for the community,” Karen said. “It’s all about Merrill.”
The Merrill Chamber of Commerce and all the local sponsors make the concert series possible, Mike said.
“We couldn’t do it without the Chamber and the rest of our sponsors,” he said.
This year, Mike and Karen have been joined in organizing the event by Terri Marten and Ike Mattson.
The public’s response to the concert series has been very positive, Karen said.
“People are always asking when is (Gazebo Nights) going to start,” she said. “We start hearing that in May.”
The Thursday night concerts will kick off July 9 with the acoustic variety and original music of Northwoods troubador Tuck Pence, sponsored by park City Credit Union.
Veteran bluesman Howard “Guitar” Luedtke and the Blue Max Mand will bring their rockin’ Delta blues to the Gazebo on July 16, sponsored by Reindl Printing, Chip’s and River Valley Bank.
Gazebo Nights will take a week off during the Lincoln County Fair and return on July 30 with Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI) award winning classic rock band Consult the Briefcase, sponsored by One Way Collision, Merrill Millwork and Lincoln Community Bank.
On Aug. 6, the gazebo will be rocking to the high energy show of Crystal & the Commotions, sponsored by BMO Harris Bank, Courtside Furniture and Johnson Pharmacy & Gifts.
Classic rockers Bobby Evans & the Alimony Band will be featured on Aug. 13, sponsored by Merrill Federal Savings & Loan and Brickner’s Park City.
The six-piece country band Stray Pony will take the stage on Aug. 20, sponsored by Merrill Police Association and Ministry Health Care.
The ever-eclectic Copper Box, with their own blend of rock, country, zydeco and polka, will close our Gazebo Nights on Aug. 27 for the fourth year in a row. Church Mutual Insurance will once again sponsor the Copper Box show.
The concerts are held from 6-8 p.m. Concert-goers are encouraged to bring their coolers and lawn chairs. Food and beverage vendors will be on site, including HAVEN, Merrill Band Boosters and Relay for Life.
The rain location will be at Les & Jim’s Lincoln Lanes, two blocks north or Normal Park on Center Avenue. No carry-ins are allowed at Les & JIm’s.
Jessi’s Wish helps local families fight cancer
Pictured is Riley Bienfang presenting a check to Tara Schimel at the First Annual Jessi’s Wish Benefit held recently at Rock Island Resort.
Riley is the son of the late Jessi Alft whose dying wish was to help local families financially in their battle to fight cancer. Jessi died at the age of 39 in 2014 after a courageous 7-year struggle with weekly chemo treatments the last five years. This check represents the 10th family that has been assisted by Jessi’s Wish.
The benefit was a huge success thanks to the generosity of local merchants and the Merrill community reaching out to help one another.

Lincoln County Sheriff’s reports
A 32-year-old Merrill man was arrested Tuesday afternoon on warrants that had been issued by multiple agencies. Deputies received a tip that the wanted man would be going to a home in the Town of Bradley off of County Rd. U early Tuesday afternoon. Deputies, with the assistance of Tomahawk Police Officers, monitored the area and spotted the man going to a home around 2 p.m. The suspect was later found hiding in the basement of the home and was taken into custody on warrants through Lincoln County for three counts of possession of methamphetamine, an Oneida County warrant for contempt of court for failing to appear on a child support matter, and through the Wisconsin Department of Corrections for probation violation. The man was brought to the Lincoln County Jail where he is being held on a cash bond.
A 20-year-old Merrill man was arrested late Wednesday evening on a felony charge of theft. Law enforcement had been searching for the man after a theft was reported Monday morning in the Town of Merrill and at a Town of Rock Falls cabin.
Deputies need your help in solving the theft of fishing equipment from a Town of Merrill boat landing. On Tuesday two men reported that they were on a guided fishing trip on the Wisconsin River. When they were completed they were loading up their equipment into the vehicle but due to a miscommunication several items were left on the shore at the Lokemoen landing. Three poles in all were reported stolen, a St. Croix Long Ranger blue in color pole with a dark green reel, a Musky Innovation Magnum Bull Dog, black with dark green reel, and a St. Croix Big Nasty blue colored pole with silver reel. The total cost of the three poles is $2,500. It may be possible that someone picked up the poles thinking they were lost or forgotten not knowing the value of the items. If you know anything about these missing fishing poles you are asked to call the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office at 715-536-6272. Callers may also call Crime Stoppers of Lincoln County at 715-536-3726. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward.
A 25-year-old Merrill man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after a traffic stop in the City of Merrill. At 12:45 p.m., a deputy stopped a vehicle on Lake Street at East 1st Street for an equipment violation. A check on the passenger showed he was wanted by the Marathon County Sheriff for a criminal traffic charge. When the deputy took the man into custody he located a pipe which is commonly used to smoke marijuana. The man was brought to the Lincoln County Jail and booked on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. At a bond hearing on Thursday he was released on a signature bond and transported to the Marathon County Jail.
A 46-year-old Almond man was injured after a one vehicle crash on Thursday morning in the Town of Corning. Just after 9 a.m., a caller reported that a vehicle had left the roadway on State Rd. 64, struck a power pole and then struck a house. The driver told a deputy he might have fallen asleep as he traveled west on State Rd. 64 near Mink Road. Corning firefighters checked the home and contacted Wisconsin Public Service to check the utilities. The driver refused medical transport.
A Lincoln County Deputy along with a member of the Marathon County Bomb Squad assisted a resident of the Town of Rock Falls on Friday afternoon after he found a live grenade. The resident phoned the Sheriff’s Office around 1:30 p.m. and reported that he had just purchased the property and while cleaning the garage he found what appeared to be a hand grenade. The Marathon County Deputy confirmed it was a live grenade and was able to secure the item for future disposal.
A 25-year-old Tomahawk man was arrested Friday evening on traffic charges after he passed an unmarked patrol car in the Town of Bradley. A deputy was traveling north on Tannery Road when a motorcycle passed him at a high rate of speed. Radar showed the motorcycle was traveling at 83 MPH in the 55 MPH zone. When the driver was stopped, a check showed his driver’s license was revoked and he was required to have an ignition interlock device on any vehicle he operates. Further, the man did not have insurance on his vehicle. The driver was brought to the Lincoln County Jail where he was booked on charges of operating after revocation and failing to have an IID device. He was also cited for speeding before he was able to post a cash bond to be released.
Two Marathon County residents were arrested Saturday evening after a report was received of a disturbance at Council Ground State Park in the Town of Merrill. As a deputy responded to the area, Merrill Police Officers watched for the suspect vehicle after the incident was reported just before 7 p.m. Minutes later, a Merrill Officer saw the vehicle leaving the park and stopped it. The occupants admitted getting into a verbal dispute at the boat landing. A check showed the male, a 32-year-old Schofield man, was on probation and out on bond both of which had a rule that he could not have contact with the female. The female, a 43-year-old Wausau woman, was also out on bond. She was arrested on charges of bail jumping and encouraging probation violation while the male was arrested for bail jumping and probation violation. Scott Doerr from Merrill was installed as Eagles State President of Wisconsin during the State convention held in Fond du lac on June 28 for a one-year term. Scott started working through the Western Zone Offices and was then nominated by his home Aerie for State office. Scott then worked his way up through various offices through nomination by former State Presidents.

The Fraternal Order of Eagles is a International organization with over 880,000 members. The Eagles raise money for local and national charities such as heart, lung, kidney cancer. The Eagles raised and donated $25 million in a five-year period for diabetes research at the University of Iowa Diabete’s Research Center. All the money raised for charities goes directly to people or facilities needing the funds and the money cannot be used for administrative costs. Last year, Wisconsin Eagles raised over $114,000.
Scott also has a State Project he is raising money for. It is Spinal Cord Injury research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. “I am looking forward to a successful year raising money for our charities on the local, state and national levels and increasing our membership to help achieve that goal,” Scott said.
Scott is married to Linda and has two sons, Michael and Christopher, and two grandchildren. Scott is an avid bowler and a not-so-good golfer. He is Bar & Restaurant Manager at the Merrill Eagles Club.

The City of Merrill has turned down a request to rezone parts of North Center Avenue. Henry Golde requested what is known as spot zoning to convert two properties in the 300 block from residential to commercial. Golde claimed he had two businesses that were interested in acquiring the houses there and building but did not reveal what they were. Several residents opposed to the change worried about increased traffic and possibly empty storefronts which would devalue the area. Golde did hint that the potential buyers were looking at an office type setting. In other city business the polling place for the fourth and fifth ward has officially now been changed to St. Francis School on West 10th Street. Previously residents of those wards voted at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Grand Avenue but that building is not handicapped accessible.
Could lights be coming to Blue Jay Stadium? Next Tuesday a special city council meeting has been scheduled and the agenda notes it will be a joint meeting with the board of education and the topic will be lights at the stadium. That meeting gets underway at 4 p.m. in the city hall council chambers.

Dr. James Janowiak along with June Winnie the area trauma coordinator joined Heidi Duley the nurse manager at Good Samaritan Health Center and taught the class to the group headed up by Nancy Stevens. Duley noted with so many families living in the rural communities first responders can mean the difference between life and death.

Lobster Fest to bolster Safe Ride Home program in Lincoln County
The first annual Merrill Lobster Fest will support the Safe Ride Home program in Lincoln County. The event, which will feature fresh Maine lobsters, will be held Aug. 1 from 4-8 p.m. at Ballyhoos on Merrill’s west side. Prospect Street in front of Ballyhoos and Cenotaph Park will be used for the event.
Tickets will only be sold on a pre-order basis until July 16, so the lobsters can be ordered, said Ballyhoos owner Mike Fick, who is organizing the event. Sales for the inaugural Lobster Fest are limited to 350 tickets. For tickets, contact the sponsoring establishments, Ballyhoos or The Beacon, in Merrill; or Twin Bay in Tomahawk.
The lobsters will be still swimming in the ocean on Thursday, July 30, and will arrive alive in Merrill on Friday.
“The only way you could get them any fresher is if you caught them yourself,” Fick said.
For a $40 ticket, Lobster Festers will be treated to a whole Maine lobster with all the fixings, including dessert. Serving will be outdoors on Prospect Street in front of Ballyhoos and Miller Furniture.
The event will also include the Lobster Roll 5K/10K run/walk, a car show and music.
Fick said the Safe Ride Home program in Lincoln County is facing an estimated $4,500 shortfall for next year. The program is funded in part by a surcharge on OWI convictions, which are declining in the state. Also, a change in the way the program is funded will place a greater percentage of the cost on local tavern leagues.
The Tomahawk/Merrill Tavern League and its participating establishments provide about 150 Safe Ride Home vouchers per month. The Safe Ride Home program benefits more than just the bar patrons who have had too much to drink, Fick said.
“It makes us all safer,” he said. “If we can stop one accident, then the program’s a winner.”
All proceeds from Merrill Lobster Fest will go to the Safe Ride Home program.
The Merrill Police Department and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in the event. Police officers will be helping crack lobsters, in fact.
The “Pick Your Ride” vehicle from the Wisconsin State Patrol – half taxi and half police car – will be on display at Lobster Fest.
