The Hatchet boys hockey team knocked off Valley team Wausau East last Thursday for its third win of the season, to replace the bad taste of a 9-2 loss to Antigo from Tuesday.
Tomahawk scored the last four goals of the game to break open a 3-3 game.
“We put one in the win column,” THS coach Chris Bembinster said. “We started this game out slow, but steadily improved as the game went on. The third period was fairly physical as you can see by the penalties called. We were happy the boys brought it together in the end to get the victory.”
THS took a 4-3 lead on Jakob Panzer’s 5-on-3 goal (A- Steven Renn, Cayton Sholz), then added a pair of power play goals from Kole Woodall (A- Coleman Behling) and Jerett Flynn (A- Jordan Thomaszewski). Panzer scored unassisted late in the game.
The Hatchets had gone up 2-0 in the first with scores from Woodall (A- Brett Gerber, Renn) and Max Bembinster (UA), and 3-1 with another score from Bembinster (UA).
Saves – THS- Dan Hanke 3-6-6–15. WE- Austin Jensen 5-8-6–19.
Red Robin race
Tomahawk tied Antigo 1-1 midway through the first period and cut it to 3-2 halfway through the second, but it was all Red Robins after that. Antigo scored 3 in the first, 4 in the second and 2 in the third.
“All I can say is the score doesn’t reflect how the boys played this game,” Bembinster said. “We took some penalties early, and a team like Antigo is going to capitalize on any mistake you make. This is as close as we have been to a complete game so far this season. The boys are responding to adversity instead of letting it over come them. We are looking forward to the second half of our season.”
Woodall scored the first THS goal (A- Panzer, Renn), and Gerber the second (A-Panzer). Both came on the power play.
Saves – THS- Hanke 15-9-13–37. Ant.- Ben Bartlettit 7-5-3–15.
