It was a rough game for Hatchet football on Friday, as they fell to the Edgar Wildcats 49-0.
The Hatchet defense was unable to stop the many scoring drives by the Wildcats, they scored four touchdowns in the first quarter, the first with a two-point conversion and the rest with extra point kicks, good for a total of 29 points. In the second quarter, Edgar scored two more touchdowns, although the second PAT attempt failed, tacking on another 13 points.
Edgar scored their last touchdown in the third with with a PAT to bring the grand total to 49. The fourth quarter saw no scoring.
“We ran into a buzz saw on Friday,” comments head coach John Larson. “Edgar has the best defense that we have played so far this year. They are very physical and play fast. We had some success early in the game on offense. After a quick score by the Wildcats, we took the kickoff and marched the ball down the field to Edgar’s 25 yard line. We were able to mix the pass and run, moving the ball efficiently. A couple miscues would result in us turning the ball over on downs.
“After that first drive, our offensive play was very inconsistent. Most of the time we were our own worst enemy. Mental mistakes will hurt you. We had way too many blown assignments, especially at this point in the season. Until we eliminate the mistakes that lead to blown assignments and poor execution, we will struggle. Consistent fundamentally sound football for four quarters is what we need to do each and every week.”
Tomahawk had a total of 61 offensive yards (17 from rushing and 44 from passing) out of 47 total offensive plays. Edgar had a total of 408 offensive yards out of 39 plays. Tomahawk had a total of five first downs, three by rushing, one by passing and one by penalty, compared to Edgar’s 12.
“Defensively it was all about BIG plays and breakdowns in our assignments,” adds Larson. “Against good teams you have to play flawless football. You have to execute as a TEAM on every play to have a chance. We are not there yet! It is something we are capable of doing, we have done it in games – just not for four quarters.
“We need to start this week as we travel to Fall Creek for a non-conference game. A big win would give us the momentum we need entering our final three weeks vs. conference foes.”
Hatchet football will face Fall Creek on Friday at 7 p.m.
